Cartagena de Indias is a port city which has historically been affected by weather events, something that increased particularly in recent years, leading to the partial loss and affectation of its Maritime Cultural Heritage. This interdisciplinary project is an initiative that aims to create a methodology where archaeological, historical, anthropological, oceanographic and hydrographic disciplines, in parallel with local communities knowledge, contribute to understands the effects of Climate Change in the region. The co-participatory approach to archaeological research seeks to create a stronger link between authorities, institutions and the community, fostering transparency and accountability in the management of projects and programmes. Giving a voice to maritime communities in Cartagena de Indias, ensures that conclusions and decisions are based on a comprehensive understanding of the relevance of Climate Change impacts on their lives and territory.
Then, primary and secondary sources of information have been used, including historical cartography, archaeological projects, aerial photographs, oceanographic and climatological reports. All this, to determine from a diachronic perspective the transformations associated with factors such as variations in the coastline, the occurrence of climatic events and their effects, the deterioration of cultural resources, the response of the inhabitants to these dynamics, the mitigation measures implemented, etc. To achieve this, the active participation of habitants, community leaders and other stakeholders was considered essential, as they have a fundamental role in the management, reaffirmation of their culture, and in the research carried out in their territory, consolidating data collection, analysis and decision-making teams. Definitely, through this collaborative approach the aim is to encourage the collaboration and joint-construction of solutions to the challenges constituted by Climate Change.
